Tweezers And Mirrors
Plucking is an age-old ritual of removing body hair, one follicle at a time. This is a type of epilation where the entire hair structure is pulled out from under the skin, taking the hair roots as well.
Plucking: The Oldest Method Of Hair Removal
Naturally, ancient peoples had to remove unwanted hairs, but their tweezers are very much different from what we use now. And even then, they had hair removal specialist as well.
- In ancient Greece, tweezing was done by simply using two halves of a bivalve shell and pulling the hair out.
- Romans baths at the height of the empire’s power employed specialized workers to pluck the hair off their clients’ bodies.
These days, plucking is still very much being done by regular folks, often targeting unwanted hair growth on their faces, and the armpit area. The usual implements in plucking are a pair of tweezers and a mirror. In some cases where hair growth can be too much for the innocuous process of removing one hair follicle at a time, (especially if you are thinking of conquering your unwanted back hair,) epilators and the threading method are used.
Plucking By Tweezers
The process of plucking is simple enough.
- You take the tweezers and you choose a hair.
- You grasp the hair securely in order to pull out the entire hair straight to the roots
- You repeat the process until you are satisfied with your task.
However, if you have a wide area of skin to work with (like your back) this simple process can be problematic on so many levels. First of all, you cannot hope to pluck all the hairs from you back using only a pair of tweezers and a mirror – at least not within the span of a couple of minutes. You can accomplish this if you are willing to dedicated most of your waking hours to this task, and by the time you finish, hair would have grown back. Secondly, hair pulling one follicle at a time can become excruciatingly painful if the process continues indefinitely.
Using An Epilator
Fortunately, there is another tool for plucking out unwanted back hair growth. An epilator is a motorized hair plucker, popularized by brands like: Epilady and Remington. An epilator mechanically grasps multiple hairs in one go – a process very similar to waxing. However, unlike waxing, this electrical device can be done without the prior use of creams, or sugar paste or wax.
The Threading Hair Removal Method
Another method of plucking out hair without the use of any mechanical or electronic devil is the threading method. Threading, as the name implies, is a hair plucking method utilizing two strings of pure cotton. The threads are arranged in such a way that when applied to the skin, they can twist and pull out whole rows of hair at one pass.
In both cases though, you would need someone else to help you remove the unwanted hair off your back. An epilator is best used when it is applied very closely to the skin – something which is nearly impossible if you have to do your own back. Threading, needless to say, entails someone to hold both threads and apply it to your skin in such a way that rows of hair are neatly removed, to avoid that patchy look. If this is your first time trying such a method or shaving implement on your back, it is highly recommended that you have that area professionally waxed first.
Epilators and the threading method are usually done as hair removal maintenance. |
