What Is Sugaring?

Sugaring, also known as Persian waxing is an epilation process where the entire hair follicle is removed straight from its roots. It works somewhat similar to the waxing method for body hair removal. However, the practice of sugaring predates the waxing method by decades. For centuries, individuals have used the sugaring method as a means to remove unwanted body hair from legs, arms and yes, even the back area.

Advantages Of Using Sugar Paste and the Sugaring Method

There are many advantages of using sugar paste as a hair removal method.

  • One: Sugaring Is Less Painful Than Waxing
    • Some people actually favor sugaring as opposed to waxing, citing that the former affords less pain than the latter. In some cases, this may be true. You see, the sugar paste used in the sugaring method attaches itself only to the hair follicles and when you correctly remove the adhesive strip, hair comes off. Waxing, on the other hand, adheres to both hair follicles and skin – and is therefore not advisable to people with skin blemishes (like moles and pimples) or damaged skin (cracked or sunburned.)
  • Two: Sugaring Is Inexpensive
    • During its earliest time, sugaring preparations could be made simply from combining sugar and water. Lemon was usually added for scent and as a disinfectant. Gradually, other household products were also used like honey and molasses. These days, the ingredients for the sugaring hair removal method remain almost unchanged. There are of course, the ready made preparations that can easily be bought over-the-counter in most drug stores now, but the key ingredient is still there: sugar paste.
    • If you really think about it, buying ready made sugaring products are actually less costly than making your own. Undeniably, the ingredients needed for this hair removal method is almost freely available at home. However, creating the consistency of the sugar paste entails a lot of a practice – too runny and the sugar paste is useless; too dense and you can hardly manipulate the taffy like substance; too much sugar or too little water creates a crumbly mixture that will not stick at all. If you think about how many trial-and-error methods you have to go through just for a few ounces of sugar paste, you may want to reconsider and buy the prepared product instead.
  • Three: Sugaring Is Made Of Natural Ingredients
    • There are many individuals who find the sugaring method more agreeable to use. For one thing, almost all its ingredients are natural made – natural ingredients that have mild chemical composition. Lemons, in particular, are mildly acidic - but nothing too harsh like the use of stronger chemicals. For people who are hypo-allergenic, using natural ingredients is a very attractive factor. They do not have to worry about contact dermatitis anytime soon.
    • Also, this factor makes it easier for people to clean up after. Unlike wax, where you need a gentle scrubbing with soap after hair removal treatment, sugar paste can be removed by gently wiping the area with warm water and cloth. People with sensitive skin and individuals prone to skin breakage also find the sugaring a relatively less painful method of removing unwanted hair growth.

Disadvantages to Using the Sugaring Method

Sugar paste is really somewhat of a weak adhesive, at least, weaker than wax preparations. In some cases, the tougher hair fibers do not come easily off with the sugaring method. Also, since you are basically handling a taffy like substance, you cannot use it on very small areas like the eyebrows and the bikini line without taking most (if not all) of the hair out.
