Epilators, Razors and Shavers

Depilation is a process of removing hair that is exposed on the surface of the skin. The most common type of depilation is shaving: the act of slicing down to skin level in order to remove the exposed hair. Shaving is done using any bladed implement like razors and all manner of shaving instruments, such as electric shavers.

Epilation, on the other hand, is the process of removing hair right down to hair roots. An epilator then, is a small hand held device that pulls the entire hair follicle from its place, and is considered as a longer (but not permanent) solution to excessive back hair growth.

Razors in History

The earliest recorded history of such implement was a copper razor dated around 3000 BC or during the Bronze Age. Other types of razors discovered during the time were made from either bronze or obsidian; these were generally oval in shape, with a small handle protruding from one end.

Even then, shaving was considered as part of personal hygiene and grooming for both men and women. Like today, almost every part of the body was shaved: from the head, to the chest, to the legs and yes, even the back. Ancient Egyptians in particular, saw a hairless body as the ultimate expression of physical beauty. These days, men and women still adhere almost to the same principles of physical beauty – and a hairless back is one thing that many aspire for.

Razors and Electric Shavers

Razors can be used to shave one’s back. However, the use of straight razors or electric shavers entails a bit of help. If you can find someone to actually shave your back for you using these implements, then that would be fine.

Points to consider

  • Make sure to ask them to shave in the opposite direction of the hair growth, and if possible, to stretch the skin somewhat for the closest possible shave.
  • However, if you intend to do this alone, we recommend you use safety razors attached to a manual device called a Razoba: an ergonomically designed back shaver. Think of this device as a back-scratcher of sorts, only that it is contoured for easy handling and that you can attach any safety razor at the other end. This allows you to safely shave your own back; and because this is a non-mechanical device, you can safely use it in the shower.
  • As with the cases of shaving using the straight razor or the safety razor, wet shaving (or the use of shaving creams or soap) is always advisable because the skin on the back is more sensitive than anywhere else in the body.
  • Always pat dry afterward shaving your back and never rub the towel in. This type of abrasive force after back shaving may cause the skin to become and feel raw; and in some cases, even infected. If you are using electric razors, we highly recommend you use a soothing cream after each shave. Petroleum jelly would be fine or any type of unscented and mild lotion.

Epilators

Epilators are hand held and electrical devices often used to maintain hair growth. It works by grasping multiple hairs simultaneously through spring rotation which eventually pulls the entire hair structure out. Epilators, though, are maintenance tools for back hair removal. Usually, people have their backs waxed first and use the epilators to remove subsequent hair growth.

This is to ensure that pain is lessened considerably.
