Laser Hair Removal Method

The use of laser is one of the most accepted hair removal methods among dermatologists these days. Its success since its introduction in the mid-1990s has remained relatively high. Experts are also saying that the drawbacks for such method remain relatively low as compared to other permanent forms of hair removal methods.

Epilation by laser, also known as photoepilation, phototricholysis, and selective photothermolysis, basically works this way:

  • Laser is introduced to a certain area of the body
  • The light selectively heats the melanin of the hair follicle, without adding any heat to the skin surface
  • The laser light is held over that part until the melanin is eventually destroyed – or enough to retard further growth.
  • Once the melanin is gone from that area, hair follicles are less likely to grow in that spot again. The hair does not completely fall off but should fall of in a couple of days.
  • After the laser treatment, cooling agents are applied to the area to promote invigoration of the skin and underlying tissues. Cooling agents can be anything from: air cooling (skin is exposed to forced cold air temped at negative 34°C); to the application of chilled clear gels and cryogen sprays to the area immediately after the laser is turned off; and to contact cooling (where the skin is gently pressed against a sterilized pane cooled by circulating water or internal cryogen.

There are precautions to consider for the laser hair removal method…

However, this laser treatment cannot solve all your unwanted hair growth problems in one go since the body can only take a defined number of laser parameters to be considered safe. Usually, laser treatments are spanned between three to eight sessions, depending on many factors, like:

  • The health of the individual during the time of the treatment,
  • The area to be worked on,
  • The denseness or coarseness of the hair material,
  • Etc.

In some cases too, touch-up treatments are required after the initial treatments, several months (even years) after first introducing the laser to the person’s system. Laser treatments are often times spaced at three to twelve weeks apart, depending on the person’s response to the initial treatment.

Often, the person who undergoes laser treatment undergoes hair shedding of the area within two to three weeks after one session. It therefore goes without saying that results vary from individual to individual.

Differing lasers offer differing results…

There is also a great difference between laser treatments from each and every dermatologist because of the lasers being used. For example:

  • The alexandrite laser (755 nm) is the most effective so far, and is safest on individuals with light colored skins.
  • Nd:YAG  (1064 nm) is safest with individuals who have darker colored skins, and
  • The pulse diode array (810 nm) is best suited for individuals who have light to medium colored skins.

The width of the laser beam also affects individual treatments. It is said that larger beams help make treatments faster and more effective. However, large beams of light may not be applicable to some areas of the body, particularly if you want to remove unwanted hair on only a very small patch of skin (like parts of the ear, or somewhere behind the nape.) If you are targeting your back area though, the larger the beam of laser light, the better it will suit you.
